A Mix Of News

Alright guys, I hope ya'll haven't given up on me with these blogs. Sorry for the lateness, I have kind of lost my groove in keeping up with these, but I will try to get better. Well, as the title appears on this blog, I have a mixture of news from the month of October up to now to fill, so be prepared, I will try my best to remember everything that has happened from then to now.

Well, October was filled with fun and adventure. To start off my Fall Break week, I had the pleasure of having mom, Esther, Tom and later Dad come down to see me. It was great fun to see them all, especially Esther whom I hadn't see since Christmas and Tom whom I hadn't seen for about three months. It was great to catch up with him and spend some time with them all. Mom, Tom and Esther came down to pick me up on a Friday and we drove straight down to Las Vegas for a showing of "Love" which was a Cirque Du Soleil production done to the music of the Beatles songs. It was amazing! I have never really been a big Beatles fan, but that night, I think that I officially became a fan. After the show, we got to have a backstage tour. My mom knew one of the girls that was in the show, and she ended up giving us the tour. It was so neat to see how much effort it takes to make a show like that happen. It was incredible! That night we ended up staying at a hotel called the Imperial Palace. I have to say that Vegas was incredible. Driving up to the city, you could see the lights from it for miles. The one thing that I hated is having to walk the streets with people passing out "cards" and also having to walk through the casinos in the hotels. It was pretty crazy. The next day, we just explored a little bit of the city. We went to the Paris section of the city, where we went to the top of the Eiffel Tower (not the real one of course). It's half the size of the actual one in Paris. It was pretty cool. After that, we ate at an amazing french buffet place and enjoyed crepes among other things. It was great. We didn't get to see as much as we wanted because we had to make it back to St. George to catch another show that night at the Tuacahn Theater to see Aida. The play is about a slave girl named Aida, who ends up working for a prince who ends up falling in love with her. It was a musical and it was really good. I enjoyed it. That night, we stayed at a hotel not too far from campus, and went to my ward to go to church. After church, we had to drop off Esther at the airport because she had to get back to Provo. She had a couple of tests the next day that she had to study for, so she had to leave early. After dropping Esther off, we went to a restaurant that one of my aunts recommended for my mom to try. My uncle had designed the restaurant. It was called Anazasi (or something like that). It was amazing. They had steaks that they brought out that were cooked on hot rocks. You got to eat them as they were cooking on the rocks. Tom and I both had filet steaks. As an appetizer we had cheese fondou with two different kinds of cheese fondous. It was all delicious and a great place to go, and a restaurant that I would go to again. The next day we went for an adventure to Zion National Park. It was all breathtaking to see all the different canyons. Tom ended up taking all the pictures for me, and maybe I can try to put some on here. It was fun to go on some of the trails and see some sites of the canyons. So it was a fun weekend.

This month really started this past weekend. My bishop had seven extra tickets that he gave to one of my friends to invite people from the ward, so she ended up inviting one of her friends and me to go see The Five Browns at the Tuacahn Theater. They are a family of three brothers and two sisters who all play the piano. The stage had five pianos and they all played famous pieces that they had composed for five people to play together. It was a fun concert and a good way to start off the weekend. Then saturday I decided to do something adventurous and different. I had been wanting to get a haircut for a long time because my hair was just looking like a mess, so I ventured out to find a haircutting place and finally decided to get a haircut. I found a place nearby that was actually pretty cheap, and when I say cheap, I mean that the price for my haircut ended up being a dollar. Now that's what I call cheap. I ended up getting it cut shorter than I have ever had it cut and surprisingly, it doesn't look too bad. I actually like it a lot. Sunday was Stake Conference. It was broadcasted, which I don't ever remember having Stake Conference broadcasted before, but it was great to hear from some of the leaders of the church.

Well, those are all the highlights of the couple of months. Next week, I get to go observe a school again for one of my classes. This time I will get to observe a middle school. It should be interesting. I can kind of already feel that I'm not going to like observing a middle school than I did observing an elementary school, but who knows, I might be surprised. We'll have to see. I have really enjoyed taking all of these education classes. It's fun to actually learn about something that you are interested in and something that will one day be your career. It's been fun forming my own opinions about teaching and deciding how I'm going to teach. I love it. Well, I am excited to see some of you in the next couple of weeks for Thanksgiving. I hope that you all have a great couple of weeks and I will see some of you guys soon! Happy Thanksgiving to all of you!!

A Month Has Flown By Already

Well, guys, sorry for the lateness of this post. I had some technical difficulties with my computer that seemed to take forever, but things are back to normal, so this shouldn't be a problem again. Well, it's going to be a bit difficult to backtrack to what? three weeks ago? So, I'm not going to mention everything that has happened then, but I will bring up the main events and then just summarize the past week.

Well, a while ago I went to the St. George temple, which is only about 5 minutes from campus, so it is perfect, and it is SO BEAUTIFUL!!! My Resident Manager, Janille invited me to go with her and her two little girls, who are just too cute. Janille has become a good friend and has been wonderful, welcoming and helpful. The temple trip was amazing. I checked out the Visitor's Center and watched a movie on Joseph Smith. It was so inspiring and a big tear-jerker. It was so amazing to see a glimpse of his life and painful to see all that he went through for the Saints. He has always been one of my favorite prophets because it just amazes me the courage that he had to establish the church, be martyred for the Saints and die for what he believed. We are so blessed because of his faith and diligence and if it weren't for him, we wouldn't even have such a strong denomination filled with faithful leaders that still guide us today. It's so incredible all that he did for us to be where we are today. Anyway, I was upset that I didn't have my camera with me to take pictures of the temple or anything, but Janille ended up taking a couple, so I will have to post them next time. Overall, I had a great time walking the grounds (or I should say rolling). It is so pretty because the grounds have a rose garden that Janille told me is filled with roses in the spring and summer and it makes the temple just look breathtaking. They don't have much right now because of the fall and winter coming soon, but I'm anxious to see what it will look like in the spring and summer. It was so peaceful and serene just to walk around it. It was a great feeling.

On the academic front, last Wednesday I got to go do observations for Sunset Elementary School, which is about 10 minutes from campus. It is one of my requirements for my Introduction to Education class, and it was a great experience. The teacher that I had to observe was great. His name is Mr. Prince and he is a complete cowboy. His room was decorated from top to bottom in western/cowboy posters and everything. Also, dressed from the head to foot as a cowboy, from the hat to the boots, everything. It was quite the sight, but he was known as "the best teacher." The faculty and the students all loved him and spoke highly of him, and I wasn't surprised. He teaches 4th grade and had the best group of students, I was really surprised. They were all well-behaved and the sweetest kids ever. It was a good class. I also got to observe a Special Ed class, which was exactly what I needed to see, so it was great. The thing that surprised me was that they have two Special Ed classes; one for the mildly disabled kids and one for the severe disabled kids, which makes sense, but not what I went through when I was in elementary school, but it was great. I chose to observe the mild and moderate kids. I honestly was a bit nervous and hesitant to observe the severe kids because I know that I would've gotten A TON of attention from them with the wheelchair.........hahaha! It would've made me feel a little uncomfortable. Anyway, the mild and moderate kids were great. I got to help one of the girls, who was actually from Mr. Prince's class, in the Special Ed class to read. It was a great experience overall. I get to do observations again next month, so we'll see what teacher I will get next, and I will try and see if I can observe the severe kids and just get a feel for how they learn and cope. It should be great.

On the church front, things are going great. I love having a church building nearby, and being surrounded by an LDS-based environment just makes me happy everyday, seriously. I haven't felt so happy in a long time. I truly missed having that influence at Andrew College with church being 30 minutes away and then being the only LDS student on campus. It was tough, but here, I feel like a million bucks. My Institute class is great. The teacher is awesome (Bro. Michael Day), just the funniest and greatest guy ever. I told him about me being from Lithuania and everything, and he was just fascinated with my story. It was funny, he told me I should write a book. He was probably the hundreth person to tell me that, which is probably a sign, I don't know. Not bad advice, but it's in my future plans. I do hope to write a book one day. I think that I do have an amazing story to tell and it would be great for other people to read. Anyway, other than that, I started visiting teaching this past week. My companion is great, her name is Tia Pennerman. She is a recent returned missionary from Atlanta, Georgia, which is way cool. She got back sometime last year and is loving Dixie. The two girls that we visit teach are; Trudie Heaton and Emily Adair, both great girls. Tia and I met with Trudie last Monday and it was great. She seems a bit shy, but she's a sweet girl. She's an art major and seems to enjoy it. I myself met with Emily on Friday, Tia had to go out of town, but I met Emily and it was great because we connected right away and just started talking about our room mate experiences and such. It was good to meet her. As for who my visiting teachers are, I have no clue, I haven't met them yet, but hopefully I will meet them soon.

Well, that seems to be the gist of all my news for now. I am excited for this coming weekend. I will be spending time with Mom, Esther, Tom and Dad in Vegas. Tom, Esther and Mom will be coming Friday to spend a day in St. George going to the Touacahn (I think that's how you spell it) Theater that night to see Aida, and then meeting Dad in Vegas Saturday for a showing of "Love" performed by Cirque Du Soleil at a theater there. Anyway, it will be great to see Tom again, who is in town from India and whom I haven't seen since he left this summer, so I'm totally excited to see him. It will be great to Esther also, whom I haven't seen since I think Christmas, which will be great to hear about her wedding plans and stuff and then of course Mom and Dad, which are always good to see. I'm way excited to spend some time with all of them, and this time I will be sure to take some pictures and will try to post them on here and on facebook, or one and the other. Well, I hope you all have a great week and weekend. Until next week!!

"In Dixieland I'll take my stand.........."

Well, it's been another week here in St. George, Utah and everything is going well. I have been here for about two weeks now and I'm still loving it. The weather here is still pretty hot, but not as humid as it would be in Georgia. It's beautiful though.

This week has been kinda quiet so this blog post may not be as long as the first because there really is not that much to report. As far as academics go, I ended up dropping one of my classes this past week. I had mentioned in the last blog that I was going to do that because I didn't want to be taking too much of a load, and there is no reason for me to rush out of here. I want to be able to enjoy my time here as much as I can. So, I ended up dropping the class that was all the way across campus. It was a computer course that I will probably end up taking next semester again, so we'll see. So, now I'm taking just four classes and my load feels a lot lighter. Also, I had my first quiz in one of my classes on Friday and I think that I did pretty well, but I will find out on Wednesday and see for sure. Homework seems to be not that big of a problem so far, but I'm sure that once things start to be in groove, it will get pretty busy, but we'll see how that goes. That's all the news on the academic front.

As far as church goes, today was my second Sunday to go and I ended up going by myself, which was fine. I ended up asking my friend Lauren (the RA) to come with me, but she was having her parents coming in to town for the weekend so she wasn't able to come, but it was still good. I met the nicest lady at church today. Unfortunately I don't remember her name, but she was so nice. I told her about myself. I had mentioned that I was born in Lithuania and she told me that she had a nephew who served his mission there, and still speaks Lithuanian. We had a nice conversation. Anyway, she ended up helping me out when I went out to my car, and helped me get in the car. It was really nice meeting her. Also, I ended up signing up for an Institute class today. I was able to do it online and I will be taking a Preparing for Eternal Marriage class on Wednesday nights, so I'm excited to start that this week. I think that it will be awesome.

Well, that seems to be it for now. Labor Day is tomorrow and there are no classes, but I will be doing homework. If I have any time left over, I will go exploring and see what else there is to do here. I hope that all of you have a great holiday tomorrow and I will catch you all again next Sunday! Until then!

A New Beginning

Well, I guess I'm back with the weekly readers, except in a better and easier way. I figured that since I'm going to be in Utah for a while, that I might as well be fair and keep some sort of "newsletter" for everyone to follow on me.

Well, to start off, the drive up here to Utah was extremely long, but it was pretty fun nonetheless. I'm just glad that I wasn't alone, or it would be scary and lonesome. I had great company with me though (Alex helping me drive and Mike driving the Jeep), which made the trip a bit more worthwhile, despite a couple of obstacles along the way, which I'm not going to repeat. Let's just say that we would not have had to waste the money and time if Mike had known which gear to use going uphills. On that note, we finally arrived at Dixie on Saturday, got unpacked and then later met with Mom and got last minute shopping done. Mom ended up spending the night with me that night and then the next day we were hoping to go to church (it was cancelled due to the dedication of a temple, I believe). So, we ended up instead having lunch with Mom before she had to head back to Salt Lake. After she left, I spent the last few hours with Mike and Al eating dinner and later watching a movie, which was great.

On Monday, classes started. Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays my schedule consists of just one class, which is at 9 in the morning, so I have yet to decide what else I can do to fill the rest of my time on those days (we'll have to see). Tuesdays, I have 3 classes one of which is all the way across campus, for which I have to use my car to get to. It starts at 10:30 and my first day I was about 10-20 minutes late trying to figure out which building it was at. I got in the right location and in the right building finally and ended up asking someone to lead me in the right direction. Once I got to the class, the teacher seemed to understand and was ok with it. Right after that class, I have a class back across campus. I was a little late the first day to that class as well, but he later told me that it was ok and he is willing to work with me if it had to happen again for any reason. The nice thing about my schedule is that all of my classes are in the same building except for Tuesdays and Thursdays when I have the class at 10:30 all the way across campus, but it helps to have teachers that are understanding and are willing to work with you, and that's one of the things that I love about this place.

Anyway, Thursdays I have 4 classes and my last class doesn't end until 6:30. So, this week I was pretty exhausted on that day because I felt like I had classes back to back. This class starts at 4 and ends at 6:30, but I like it because it's a class that teaches about special needs and disabilities and it's for students that want to be Special Ed teachers, which is perfect and I'm really excited to be in it. I hope it goes well. I have decided to drop a class though, just to make my first semester a little bit easier. Plus, I figure that I have as much time here as I need, so I don't need to rush, but I have yet to figure that out this week, so we'll see how that goes.

On a social note, I have met a few awesome people here. One is a Resident Manager who lives with her husband and two kids on campus. Her name is Janille and her husband's name is Mike. Mike is an assistant basketball coach and is also one of the advisors for the school. They are both so nice and have offered to help me with anything. In fact, Janille has offered to do my laundry for me since I can't really get to the laundry, or really reach the machines. Anyway, she has been a lot of help with that and I'm very grateful. Another person that I met is an RA on my level. Her name is Lauren and she lives just a couple of doors down from me. She is engaged to be married in February, and is excited about that. She has been so welcoming towards me and has offered for me to hang out with her anytime. In fact, Wednesday night the school had a magician/comedian come to perform at the school, so her and I and her friend Mackenzie all went together. Needless to say the performance was not that great. We wasted 5 bucks on a disappointment, but the company was still good and I had a good time just being with them.

This weekend not too much happened except for today. I ended up going to church with Lauren and her fiance Gavin, who is really nice, and a girl named Ashley. It was good, but long. Different parts of my "house" go at different times depending on what tower you are in. The place I'm in is called Nisson Towers, I'm in the A tower, and we are lucky to have church that starts at 1:00. We'll just see if I make it when they change it to 9:00 in the morning, should be interesting. For some reason they had us meet in one classroom for the whole 3 hours, and it felt like we were in there for forever, but it was good nonetheless. Then tonight we had a fireside/convocation where we got to hear Pres. Henry B. Eyring speak, and it was awesome. I was excited the whole week once I saw the poster for it on my way to one of my classes one day. I haven't yet signed up for Institute, but I definitely plan on going. I heard a whole thing at church today about Institute and how we all should go, and what great experiences we can have from going, and I definitely plan on going for sure.

Well, that wraps up my first week here. So far, I love it here. I'm so excited to be here. I feel like this is a whole new chapter in my life that I can't wait to keep on writing, so to speak. I had great memories at Andrew that I will never forget and I hope that I can make even better memories here. I'm excited to know that I'm not the only LDS member here, and that is comforting and a huge relief. At Andrew I was the only one and it was pretty hard, but I still had a blast there. The other thing that is a little awkward for me is that in almost every class that I'm in, majority of the students are married or engaged. So, it makes things pretty interesting and a little weird for me. It makes me feel a little out of the loop, but hopefully this is where I hope to be one of the lucky ones too (someday).

Well, I love you all and hope to keep this up. Expect a weekly blog from me every Sunday. If I happen to slack off for any reason, well then keep bugging me about it, and I will get right back on track. Otherwise, Sundays it is. So until next Sunday, so long!!
